Submersibles

A submersible requires a secure place to be stored. For that reason, a carrier provides storage for these vessels. These vessels may be used for research, or they may simply be used for scientific exploration. The services offered by carriers are tailored to the needs of each shipper.

Scientists on the Alvin were able to collect bathymetry data and deep-sea corals for research at the California Institute of Technology. The research included eighteen dives to a secondary seamount. The Alvin then returned to the Mid-Atlantic ridge in early June, where it deployed WHOI monitoring equipment around a hydrothermal mound. The Alvin also conducted two NOAA Ocean Exploration dives in July and August.

Alvin underwent a triennial overhaul in 1989. In addition to this, it received through-hull electrical penetrators. The submersible was ready for the new operating season, which started in August. The scientists then proceeded to study the mid-Atlantic ridge and a sludge dumpsite in the New York Bight. After the summer season, the submersible underwent a series of test dives.

The Alvin has successfully completed four engineering test dives in the waters off Costa Rica and Peru. Its first science voyage began in late March. Floating platforms

Floating platforms for carrier storage service (FPSOs) are floating platforms that store oil and gas. The FPSO fleet is comprised of three basic types. They are semisubmersibles that feature a hull, a topside, and a mooring system. Most of these vessels are currently installed in the Gulf of Mexico. However, they are also installed off the coasts of Africa, Brazil, the North Sea, and Southeast Asia.

The first FPSO platform was constructed in 1977. The Keppel Shipyard in Singapore converted an existing LNG carrier into an LNG FPSO in 2007. The LNG FPSO operates under the same principles as an oil FPSO and produces natural gas, condensate, and liquefied petroleum gas.

The market for floating storage is divided by size, water storage, and owner. Small storage units have less than 1,000 MBBL of capacity, while medium and large storage facilities have higher storage capacities.
